Smart NIDs to help check crime, corruption: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said Smart NID cards will help contain crime and corruption in the country boosting dynamism in different organisations both in the public and private sectors.
"The Smart NID Card will help to contain crime and corruption in the country apart from bringing dynamism in the activities of different organizations both in the public and private sectors," she said.
The Prime Minister said this when the features of the Smart NID Card were presented to her at the PMO, a news agency report said.
After the presentation, PM's Press Secretary Ihasanul Karim briefed reporters.
The Prime Minister also asked the authorities concerned to carry out campaign on the benefits of the Smart National Identity (NID) Card, which will be introduced by the Election Commission soon.
"The people would be encouraged to take the smart card if they know its benefits," she said.
The Prime Minister expressed her satisfaction over the progress of the ongoing project and said that it is a very good initiative.
Director General and Project Director of the Smart National Identity Card Project Brigadier General Sultanuzzaman Mohammed Saleh Uddin made a power-point presentation and highlighted different features of the Smart NID Card.
During the presentation, the project director said a database of over nine crore people has been developed for the introduction of the Smart NID Card.
He also highlighted the technical design and 25 security features of the Smart NID Card. The security features of the card have been incorporated in three tiers to check fake ID cards.
The Election Commission made its design consistent with the spirit of the Liberation War.
He also mentioned that each card will last at least 10 years.
The overall activities of the project have been expanded up to upazila and thana level.
