Smith 183 sets SA for huge total

Thursday, 7 January 2010

South Africa's marathon second innings was finally brought to a close after 7.2 overs of the afternoon session, as Graeme Smith set England a massive 466 for victory, or more realistically four-and-a-half sessions to survive, according to website cricinfo.
Smith was the mainstay of South Africa's innings with a brilliant 183, but it was the under-fire JP Duminy who provided the final surge after lunch, as he added 31 runs to his interval score of 5 not out, including a glut of cover-drives and a big six over midwicket, before being caught behind off James Anderson to prompt the declaration.
AB de Villiers, who might have been expected to lift the tempo, was expertly caught by Stuart Broad, running back from mid-off in the second over of the session to give Anderson his second wicket of the innings, while Mark Boucher came and went in a hurry, smacking the first ball of Graeme Swann's spell over midwicket for six, before top-edging another sweep in the same over.
End of innings South Africa 291 (Kallis 108, Anderson 5-63) and 447 for 7 declared (Smith 183, Amla 95) lead England 273 (Prior 76, Morkel 5-75) by 465 runs.
