Smuggled spices flooding markets in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Sept 25: Spices smuggled from India flooded the markets in Nilphamari district. Smugglers are active in different spots of Indo-Bangladesh border of Dinajpur and Nilphamari districts.
Particularly Hilly railway station of Dinajpur district is the main spot of smuggling. Sources said the smuggling of Indian spices gained pace targeting the ensuing Eid-ul-Azha festival.
The main spices that are being smuggled are black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, cumin seed and so on.
Sources said the main wholesale market of smuggled Indian spices is Syedpur commercial town from where the spices are transported to different areas of Nilphamari district. Sources added some syndicates are engaged in smuggling round the year and women and children are being used as carriers. Intercity trains such as Nilsagar, Titumir, Borendra and Rupsha are mainly used in transporting the spices.
