BOGURA, Nov 12: Good production of snake bean (Borboti) has delighted the grassroots farmers in the district this season.
Sources said hundreds of peasants in the area have achieved self-reliance by growing the popular vegetable commercially.
Munil Bormin of Shibganj upazila said farming of the item is expanding for high market demand.
Moreover, low production cost and repeated yield encourage the growers to cultivate snake bean in more land, the grower added.
He further said authority of the Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) has provided quality seeds among the farmers to make the farming a success.
Officials at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said snake bean cultivation is popular here for high yield.
The department provides all necessary support in this connection every season, they added.
"I have cultivated snake bean on 23 decimals of land spending Tk 4,500 this season," said Arun Kishor of Shibganj upazila.
The grower said he started harvesting his produce from the last month and made profit of Tk 45,000 till now.
Deputy Director of DAE Pratul Chandra Sarker said snake bean grows well in the district. "We insist the peasants to expand farming of the vegetable for more profit", he added.
