Soaring food prices and costs of living

Friday, 3 August 2007

COARSE rice of the worst variety now sells for Taka 26 per kg. This is without a parallel in Bangladesh's history. Ata is selling for Taka 35 per kg which was some Taka 24 only about a week ago. Prices of foodgrains are not creeping up but shooting up.
Under the circumstances, the hardships of common people need no explanation. All compliments for having a big forex reserve, neat macro economic management, etc., become meaningless when the costs of living are becoming unbearable for the poor who are the majority among the population.
