Soaring prices, gas shortage dampen festive spirit

Wednesday, 20 March 2024

The holy month of Ramadan, a time for spiritual reflection and community gatherings, has begun. However, the first day of fasting was marred by a disheartening reality - a significant rise in commodity prices and a severe gas shortage.
For many Dhakaites and residents of Savar, on the capital's outskirts, the iftar table, a cornerstone of Ramadan rituals, became a battleground of rising costs. Essential items like lentils, onions, and sugar have witnessed a sharp increase, putting a strain on household budgets. This and the ongoing gas crisis have left many families struggling to prepare a proper iftar meal.
The gas shortage has been particularly disruptive. Homes across Dhaka and Savar faced long hours without gas, making it impossible to cook meals. This disrupts the iftar tradition and adds stress and frustration to an already challenging time.
The situation begs the question - how can we celebrate Ramadan with peace of mind when necessities become a luxury? The authorities must take immediate steps to address the price hike and ensure a steady gas supply. Price control mechanisms and improved distribution channels are crucial to alleviate the burden on ordinary citizens.
