Sobhan files appeal with SC challenging death penalty

Condemned war criminal Abdus Sobhan, also a top leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, filed on Wednesday an appeal with the Supreme Court (SC) challenging the death penalty awarded to him by the International Crimes Tribunal-2 for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971, reports UNB.
Contacted, barrister Shishir Manir, the counsel for Sobhan, told the news agency that they submitted the appeal with the relevant section of the Appellate Division of the SC in compliance with the prescribed rules under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act.
He further said they attached 1,182 pages of documents with the appeal mentioning 92 grounds for seeking acquittal of the charges.
Convicting 85-year-old Maulana Sobhan on charges of crimes against humanity, including genocide, during the Liberation War, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 on February 18 unanimously sentenced him to capital punishment.
