JHENIDAH, Sept 23: State-owned banks (SoBs) in Kushtia are lagging behind the private banks in respect of service, mainly for technological drawback and being housed in old-fashioned buildings, people concerned said.
On the other hand, accommodated in well-furnished modern buildings, private banks in Kushtia are competing with each other having been devoted to quality service, the trader added.
SoBs in Kushtia still do not have the logistics required to keep pace with the age, Shohrab Hossain, a client of Kushtia said.
"We are not given the support of the required number of computers, printers, UPs, etc. as soon as we want them. If we submit requisition for any device today, we may get it after six months or one year", said a Sonali Bank officer in Kushtia.
"Proper monitoring is a must to ensure quality service in the SoBs and the government has to increase both accountability and facilities in the SoBs", said a banker.
"As the government is taking time to declare the promised separate pay scale for bankers, we are losing action-inspiration," said another banker working in Janata Bank in Kushtia.
Incidents of burglary like in Sonali Banks recurred as banks were located on the ground floors. Banks on the ground floors face problems in the flood-affected areas too.
Old-generation officers are not accustomed with digital or computerized banking. At present, the number of active workmen is insufficient, said an officer. After five years, as younger officers will replace old ones, computer-operating manpower in SoBs will increase significantly, the officer added.
A SoB bank officer, requesting for anonymity said the system of a private bank is to debit from an account-holder but in case of ours, we scan the image of a cheque and send it with information for collection. The process takes time to displeasure of the clients.
