Social awareness for preventing child marriage stressed

RANGPUR, Sept 17 (BSS): Comprehensive efforts of all and social awareness could prevent child marriage for normal growth and flourishing talent of female children to ensure their brighter future, speakers at an advocacy workshop said on Tuesday.
They stressed for eradicating child marriage, dowry, polygamy, repression and violence against women once for all to save tens of hundreds of female children from shattered life in future through removing these decades-old social curses and barriers.
Bangladesh Advance Students for Interrelation Council (BASIC), an NGO, organised the daylong advocacy workshop on 'Child Marriage' at under Fulbari upazila parishad auditorium in Dinajpur with a view to prevent child marriage from the society.
Fulbari Area Development Programme (ADP) of World Vision Bangladesh (WVB) extended cooperation in arranging the workshop for the GO-NGO officials, public representatives, journalists, teachers, civil society members and community leaders.
Fulbari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Moniruzzaman attended the advocacy workshop as the chief guest with upazila female Vice-chairman Hasina Begum in the chair.
Vice-chairman of Fulbari upazila Manjurul Kader, Project Officer Fulbari ADP of WVB for Aladipur union Pallabi Murmu and Executive Director of BASIC Shyamol Chandra Sarker addressed the workshop as the special guests.
Councilors Tonzu Ara Begum, Sekendar Ali, Anisur Rahman, Nazrul Islam and Joy Prakash Narayan of Fulbari pourashava took part in the open discussion session of the workshop moderated by Field Organiser of BASIC Chiranjeet Roy.
In their speeches, the speakers blamed poverty, discriminatory attitude towards girl children, superstitions, religious misinterpretations, eve-teasing, illiteracy, dowry and lack of adequate awareness as the main reasons behind child marriage.
