SOCIAL business, being promoted by Nobel Laureate, Dr Muhammad Yunus, denotes that money-makers have social responsibilities.
Social business stresses upon social service with limited or no profit. Under it, the profit is reinvested in the same business for better results.
Dr. Yunus does not prescribe individuals to provide charity for eternity which could be monotonous for the donor. On the other, the receivers could then grow the habit of begging and lose the initiative for work.
For traditional commercial business, the only objective is to make profit.
But social business, as Dr Yunus visualises, can solve social problems. Social business planning requires creativity. Success would depend on the skill to innovate.
Grameen Bank hosted a discussion by students from different universities to introduce them to the concept of social business. The discussion sought to encourage them to get into social business in order to serve the society.
Dr Yonus deserves praise for valuing the creativity of the students. He gave them a huge platform to serve the society. It was a heroic initiative on his part.
As the future leaders, the students should rtespond to the challenging task of changing the society.
