Sunday, 27 June 2010

MYMENSINGH, June 26 (BSS): Speakers at a discussion here today laid emphasis on social movement for protecting the people, particularly the youth, from drug addiction side by side enforcing laws to prevent availability of contraband drugs and their illicit trafficking.
At a discussion on the occasion of "International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking", they opined that parents and guardians in all spheres should remain vigilant on daily movements, companions and changes in behavioural pattern of the children to save them from addiction.
A social awareness movement against drug abuse and stern legal action against the persons involved in drug trafficking are the most urgent needs of the day as the abuse of drugs and their trafficking is deeply linked with crimes, social instability and poor state of national health.
Narcotics Control Department, Mymensingh (NCDM) and local district administration jointly organised the discussion at 'Boishaki Mancha' at Poura Park in the town this afternoon.
Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner Lokman Hossain Meah was the chief guest at the discussion with Deputy Director of NCDM Mohammad Jafarullah Kajol in the chair.
Superintendent of Police Khandaker Golam Faruk and Civil Surgeon Mohammad Amzad Ali Fakir spoke at the discussion as special guests.
NCDM in cooperation with the district administration and various socio-cultural organisations undertook elaborate programmes from June 20 to June 26 to mark the day with the theme "Think health not drugs".
On the concluding day today, a big procession was brought out from Anandamohan College campus that ended at the same venue after parading different city streets.
At end of the procession, Prof Mannan, Principal of Anandomohan College, conducted an oath to the participants who expressed commitment to work unitedly and not to take drugs for freeing the society from drug abuse.
