FE Report
Speakers at a workshop emphasised on the soil mapping and conducting survey on the soil status so that agricultural land and industrial land could be differentiated clearly.
They said the soil survey should be conducted in the district level and fertile agricultural land should not be used for industrial purposes.
They said this at a workshop titled 'Sustainable Land Management for Agricultural Development' at the Agriculture Information Service (AIS) in Khamarbari in the city Thursday.
They also added proper implementation for national land use policy to ensure food security and environment balance of the country and crop zoning which will be economically and environmentally viable.
Anwar Faruk additional secretary of Ministry of Agriculture said as chief guest: "We are working on draft of Agriculture Land Protection and Land Use Act 2011. We have to make soil mapping for land for agriculture and for land industries for sustainable land management."
"We have to emphasise on better land management, vertical housing, and salinity tolerant crop varities. We have to innovate less fertiliser and less water efficient crop varities so that we can produce more food for the people of the country."
Hasanul Haque, director general of Department of Agriculture Extension said, "Around 220 hactore of agricultural land goes into industrial purposes everyday. It is a big threat."
He discouraged brick fields near agricultural land as it uses top soil of land which destroy the fertility of land and excess use of fertiliser and pesticide also hampers the fertility.
"We are losing land in different ways like river erosion and other natural disasters. So we have to focus on sustainable land management for agriculture development," he added.
Md Zahangir Alam, national project director of community rural radio project made a presentation on sustainable land management and agricultural development.
