RANGPUR, Jan 11: A section of unscrupulous fuel traders at different areas of the district are doing brisk business by selling adulterated and substandard fuel to the vehicle owners.
Vehicle owners and drivers alleged that the fuel traders are deceiving people by selling adulterated petrol to them.
They are earning a big profit by cheating consumers. It is difficult to distinguish the colour of adulterated petrol. Many of them alleged that their vehicles are getting damaged on using the spurious petrol.
It is further alleged that owing to lack of monitoring by the concerned authorities, the consumers of fuel at different upazilas have become hostage to the dishonest fuel traders.
A number of vehicle owners also claimed that due to use of adulterated petrol various problems are arising in the engines of the vehicles. The engines of their vehicles emit thick black smoke with harsh sound which is polluting the environment.
Some vehicle owners also said that besides selling substandard fuel filling stations are also deceiving the customers with quantity of fuel. Such illegal activities should be stopped by launching anti-adulteration drive, they said.
Abdur Rahman Mintu, a college teacher in the city told The Financial Express that he bought some petrol from a filling station at Moslem Bazar area under Mithapukur upazila few days ago and after going about one kilometre his motorbike suddenly stopped and he had to take it back to a nearby workshop. The mechanic at the workshop said that the bike went out of order as he used substandard fuel.
A filling station owner in the city requesting anonymity said that they buy fuel from depots at Parbotipur of Dinajpur and Baghabari under Sirajganj. So if the fuel is substandard they have nothing to do in this regard.
Some filling station owners alleged that a syndicate is resorting to the illegal act by supplying adulterated fuel to different filling stations across the region.
In this circumstances vehicle owners urged the concerned authority to take necessary steps to stop selling of adulterated and low quality fuel and punish the culprits who are involved in such malpractice.
