South Africa whitewash Bangladesh

Saturday, 15 March 2008

After a clean sweep in the two-match test series, visiting South Africa also whitewashed Bangladesh in the three-match Warid ODI Series winning the 3rd match by seven wickets at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium (SBNS) in the city Friday, reports UNB.
The day's victory also elevated the Proteas to number one position in ODI ranking leaving world champions Australia behind. Besides, South Africa captain Graeme Smith crossed the 5000-run mark in ODI in this match.
Responding to a paltry target of 144, the tourists reached home in 34.2 overs scoring 147 with skipper Smith topscoring unbeaten 68 off 94 balls that included three fours and three spectacular sixes.
In-form Smith was adjudged man of the series for his wonderful batting performance, scoring a total of 199 runs in three ODIs to become the highest scorer in the series.
Defending the poor total, the Bangladeshi spinners made the task a bit harder for South Africa as opener Herschelle Gibbs threw his wicket away to left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak Raj as his shot was caught by Ashraful at cover scoring only 10 in the 6th over.
Then number three Alviro Petersen joined Smith to add another 40 runs in the 2nd wicket stand before being victim to lbw for 24 to give another left-arm spinner Mosharraf Hossain Rubel his first ODI scalp.
At 59 for 2, wicket keeper AB de Villeiers came at the crease to pair with Smith and quick-fired 40 runs off 37 balls fashioned with seven glorious fours before being bowled by medium pacer Farhad Reza.
Then middle order Jean Paul Duminy and the captain did the rest for the Spring Bock to seal a clean sweep.
Rubel, Farhad and Razzak took one wicket each for Bangladesh.
Earlier, winning the toss for the 3rd match in a row, Bangladesh skipper Mohammad Ashraful again opted to bat first but their batting wobble was the worst in this match as they couldn't cross the 150-mark for being bundled out for just 143 in 42.5 overs. The tigers managed 178 in the first ODI and 173 in the 2nd ODI.
Two left-hand openers -- Tamim Iqbal and Shahriar Nafees -- seemed to give a good start to their side but unfortunately Tamim was given out by a wrong decision of umpire Nadir Shah for 8.
TV replay suggested that Pacer Albie Morkel's delivery did not touch the bat of Tamim. It rather got his pad before going to the hands of wicket keeper De Villeirs.
Nafees was the 2nd man to go being caught behind by De Villiers off another pacer Morne Morkel making team highest 25 off 33 balls with three fours.
After 41 for 2, skipper Ashraful joined number three Nazimuddin but he again worsened the miseries of the hosts by throwing his wicket to Albie Morkel for 9 when he was caught by Hashim Amla at mid-on while miscuing a pull shot.
Soon after Nazimuddin followed him scoring 20 as he walked across his wicket and tried to slog a good length delivery of Albie Morkel and could only left his side hovering at 72 for 4 after 18 overs.
After that no other Bangladesh batsmen could stand before the South African bowling attack as Shakib Al Hasan 12, Rokibul Hasan 12, Farhad Reza not out 20, Abdur Razzak 9, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza 5 and Rubel 3 only to take the team score close to 150.
Albie Morkel was the wrecker of the Proteas bowling attack claiming four wickets for 29 runs in 8 overs to be adjudged man of the match while off-spinner Johan Botha gave him proper support picking up three wickets for 34 runs.
Earlier, Bangladesh was outplayed by nine wickets in the first ODI in Chittagong and by seven wickets in the 2nd ODI at Mirpur. Before that they conceded defeats in both the tests.
