Soybean output to drop 9.81pc

Wednesday, 10 October 2007

SHANGHAI, Oct. 9 (Xinhua): China's soybean sowing area is 8.8 million hectares in 2007, a decrease of 480,000 hectares or 5.17 per cent from the 9.28 million hectares in 2006, according to the latest statistics published by the State Grain and Oil Information Center yesterday.
Based on this, it is expected that China's soybean output will be 14.4 million tons in 2007, a decrease of 1.57 million tons or 9.81 per cent from the 15.97 million tons reported in 2006, mainly due to the drought in Northeast China.
Meanwhile, the centre predicts that China's maize sowing area is 28.05 million hectares in 2007, 1.08 million hectares more than the 26.97 million hectares in 2006 or up 4 per cent year on year.
The Spring maize sowing area in Northeast China and summer maize sowingarea in North China have all increased, due to higher yield from maize planting than soybean planting. It is expected that China's maize output will be 149 million tons in 2007, an increase of 3.52 million tons or 2.42 per cent over 2006.
