Monday, 13 October 2014

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at the assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on Sunday called for increasing women's representation in politics, reports UNB.
"Women's representation in politics and participation in all sorts of elections will have to be increased to ensure the empowerment of women in real sense," the newly-elected chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) said.
Dr Shirin Sharmin made the remarks while addressing a meeting of women parliamentarians in the IPU 131st assembly, held at Geneva in Switzerland from October 12-16, said a Parliament Secretariat press release.
The special measures should be taken to enhance women's participation in parliament and decision-making process, she said citing the examples of Bangladesh where there are 50 parliamentary seats kept aside for women.
Political parties should accommodate more women in their various committees to increase women's participation in direct election, the Speaker said.
