A day before Parliament goes into session, the Speaker held a closed door parley with the Chief Whip of the Opposition Saturday to resolve the current impasse caused by BNP' s boycott of the House, reports UNB.
Speaker Advocate Abdul Hamid invited Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farooque over a cup of tea at his Parliament office.
The meeting that lasted for nearly an hour focused on a number of pressing issues for which BNP has been boycotting the parliament, a source close to the meeting told the news agency.
The opposition chief whip will convey the outcome of the meeting to opposition leader Khaleda Zia.
BNP has taken a hard stand to continue its abstention from parliament session as reflected through various statements made by the party's senior leaders.
BNP front ranking leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed at a press briefing Saturday abruptly dismissed the possibility of their returning to the House.
On November 29, Zainul Abdin Farooque rejected the Speaker's call to the boycotting opposition lawmakers to join parliament and play a constructive role.
The Speaker made the call at the annual general meeting (AGM) of Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) on November 28. BNP and its allies Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and BJP boycotted almost all the sessions since the present parliament began its journey on January 25 last year.
