Speakers for expansion of Aus, maize farming, safe vegetables in Sylhet region

SYLHET, Jan 05: Speakers at an event in Sylhet stressed on Saturday special measures and sincere efforts from all concerned for increasing Aus paddy and maize farming in the division, which had long been far behind in this regard.
DAE's Crop wing organised the two-day for training 30 selected farmers from Dakshin Surma, Sylhet Sadar and Golapganj upazilas on raising the faming of Aus paddy, maize and safe vegetables.
Senior officials at the inaugural session discussed the problems and prospects of increasing yield of Aus paddy, maize and safe vegetables in Sylhet region while assuring extending necessary assistance from DAE for the farmers.
DAE's Director, crops wing SM Hasen Ali attended it as chief guest while Deputy Director, Sylhet Md. Abul Hashem chaired.
Training Wing's Director Nitya Ranjan Biswas, Assistant Director Alimuzzaman Mia and Sylhet Agricultural Institute Principal Md. Abdur Razzaque conducted the sessions. They presented the target issues and elaborated the potentiality of the programme.
The event was told that yet there are scopes for expansion of Aus in this region since it needs no irrigation. On the other hand, the maize marketing was albeit troublesome at the beginning, years ago.
But it is over by now as a good marketing chain is now established. Through BADC supply of quality and high yielding seeds would be ensured in time, they assured.
Besides, they stressed selecting quality and high yielding variety seeds, intensive care, fertiliser, irrigation and pest management. On the other hand grading of produces, post harvest management as well as preservation of seeds at farmers' level for next season also play major role in reducing wastes and ensure better yield, they noted.
