Speakers for extracting coal from N region to set up coal-fired power plant there

RANGPUR, Sept 18: Speakers in a day-long seminar here on Wednesday last recommended extraction of coal from northern region immediately and setting up of a coal fired power plant to reduce power shortage in the northern region as well as in the country.
They also recommended a balanced national coal policy giving priority to the development of various regions.
They urged the government to take stern action against those who were making much propaganda about lifting of coal and hindering extraction of underground coal in Rangpur and Dinajpur districts.
The speakers also placed a number of recommendations in the seminar organised jointly by Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) and Greater Rangpur Welfare Samity, Dhaka at RCCI conference room.
RCCI president Mostofa Azad Chawdhury Babu presided over the seminar while president of Greater Rangpur Welfare Samity and also former NBR executive chairman Nazrul Islam moderated it.
Four keynote papers on 'Development of Greater Rangpur and the northern region: problems and potentiality' were presented in the seminar.
Former chairman of Bangladesh Power Development Board Bri Gen (Rtd) MA Malek, former chairman of BCIC and former chief engineer of LGED Monwar Hossain and Vice president of Greater Rangpur Welfare Samity MA Mojid spoke at in the seminar.
Monwar Hossain said that the government should set up two urea fertiliser plants at Rangpur or any other place in the region.
He said gas supply through pipe-line should be extended up to Uttara EPZ to enhance industrialisation of the region.
