Speakers lay stress on raising Aus, maize yield

SYLHET, Nov 17: Speakers laid emphasis at an event in Sylhet on Saturday on taking special measures and sincere efforts from all concerned for increasing Aus and maize production in all the four districts of Sylhet division.
About 150 officials from agriculture-related departments, district, upazila and union-level officials and farmers took part in the regional workshop styled 'Problems and prospects of increasing yield of Aus paddy and maize farming in Sylhet region'.
Additional Secretary of Ministry of Agriculture (Extension Wing) Sanat Kumar Shaha was the chief guest and Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Sylhet region, Ashoke Kumar Halder was the special guest.
Additional Director of DAE Md Altabur Rahman presided over the event.
Director of the project named 'Raising crop intensity in Sylhet division' Md Ohiduzzaman presented the target issues and elaborated the potentiality of the programme.
The chief guest said, "We all should initiate for boosting Aus and maize production in the region. Coordinated effort will help achieve the goal."
"We have arranged Tk 20 million for the programme. It would be spent for seeds, fertiliser and irrigation of the demonstration plots", he added.
Mr Shaha urged the officials and farmers for making the programme a success.
"All departments, and institutions linked to agriculture like DAE, BADC, seed and irrigation and others including farm marketing should sincerely extend all out support for this regional programme", he said.
DAE deputy directors Md Abul Hashim, Md Shahjahan, Bashir Ahmed Sarker and Mohammad Ali also addressed the function.
