Special cards for 10m people

Tuesday, 28 June 2022

Prices of all daily essentials are increasing day by day. However, people's salaries or income have remained low. This is reducing their purchasing power and compelling them to cut their expenses. Low and middle-income households are also compelled to pick and choose between what necessities to prioritise. Many have planned to pull their children out of school amid constant price hikes since they can no longer afford to pay school fees and other expenses. Some have restricted themselves to a single meal per day.
In addition, some unscrupulous traders have taken this as an opportunity to hoard items, create artificial shortages, and charge high prices for essential commodities. The authorities concerned must take strict action against those who are exploiting common consumers. Besides, the government decision of providing limited-income people with special cards should be implemented as early as possible. These cards are to be given to 10 million people so that they can buy rice, edible oil, chickpeas, lentils, sugar and other daily commodities at subsidised prices. We urge the authorities concerned to prepare the list of 10 million people, as promised by Prime Minister.
