Spectacular boat race held on Rupsha

Our Correspondent KHULNA, Oct 23: A spectacular boat race on the river Rupsha was held today. Thousands of people assembled on the both side of the river and the Rupsha Bridge. "The Banglalink 5th Khulna Boat Race" was arranged by Nagar Samajik and Sangskritik Sangothon. The race was formally inaugurated by the KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khalequeas as the chief guest while Nazrul Islam Monju MP, Molla Jalal Uddin MP, Commodore Commanding BNS Titumir Khulna Khandoker Towfikuzzaman, Deputy Commissioner Jamsher Ahmed Khndoker, regional head of Banglalink Babul Haque, pannel mayor Azmol Ahemd Tapon and Sk. Ashrafuzzaman were present as special guests in the inaugural session. The race started from Custom Ghat No.-1 and ended at Rupsha Bridge. The whole area on the river banks were echoing with the sound of drums, flutes and musical instruments. Ten boats from the Paikgacha, Koyra, Dumuria upazilla of Khulna district, Satkhira and Narail and some other districts took part in the race. The boat of Shanta team of Garikhali under Paikgacha was declared first, Tiger team of Dumuria was second and the third one was the boat of Sundarbans team of Koyra. KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque handed over the trophies among the winners. A cultural function was held at Rupsha Bridge premises arranged by Bangla Link. Mother hit by son, killed A mother was killed when her son struck with a stick at Kachua thana of Bagerhat district on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Hasina Begum (24) wife of Jahangir Sheikh of village Char-Tengarakhali under sadar thana of Bagerhat district. Police and local sources said that Rayhan (9), son of Hasina a student of class three, wanted food from his mother after returning from Madrasha. When his mother delayed to serve his food he hit his mother with a stick. His mother fell on the floor and local people took her to the Kachua Health Complex. Later she was shifted to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital where she succumbed to his injuries. A UD case was filed in this connection.
