Speed boat strike continues

Friday, 29 October 2010

MADARIPUR, Oct 28 (bdnews24.com): Speed boat movement on Mawa-Kaorakandi route across the river Padma remained suspended for the second day Thursday, causing woes to hundreds of passengers.
Speed Boat Owners Association stopped plying their vessels on the route from 10am Wednesday demanding increasing the fare from Tk 110 to TK 120, said local BIWTA officials.
Kaoradandi Speed Boat Owners Association general secretary Delwar Hossain told the news agency that the boat drivers demanded raised fare claiming they have to travel an additional distance due to rising sand islands and poor navigability along the river.
He also said the halt of boat movement would continue until the fares are raised.
The suspension of speed boat plying caused great woes to hundreds of passengers who prefer them to ferries or launches for a quick crossing the river.
