Spelling errors and Bangla phonetics
Friday, 12 March 2010
On March 9, a local English daily published the company name of 'Thermax' as 'Tharmex' on its headline! In the first paragraph of the report the spelling was also wrong, while the fifth paragraph had it right! I cite this as an example. Over the last few days, Bangla words published in many English dailies were not phonetically spelled. Phonetically, it was rather somewhat confusing.
Normally, all Bangla words written in English should be phonetically spelled correctly. Take 'Bongo Bondhu' and 'Bongo Bhobon' for examples. I have noticed that most of our English dailies, spell: 'Bango Bandhu'' and 'Bonga Bhaban'! Only in a few cases the spelling is phonetically correct, which seem to be more often the exception, rather than the rule.
You will appreciate that our daily newspapers should use the correct phonetic spelling of Bangla words, when printing it in English! This error is mostly related to the misuse of vowels (a,e,i, and u) in most cases.
This phonetic error in spelling is fairly common in most of our English dailies. Possibly, the reason is that phonetic is not considered to be an important part of the syllabus, in English grammar and composition in schools and colleges, and is usually a neglected subject as such!
