SPI report and lesson for politicians

Wednesday, 9 April 2014

The Social Progress Index Report-2014, published by Washington based non-profit organisation, Social Progress Imperative, ranked Bangladesh 99th among the 132 countries. It is an achievement in the sense that Bangladesh is able to surpass India (102) and Pakistan (124) losing only to Sri Lanka (85) in the South Asian region. This position has been bestowed to Bangladesh as the sign of ensuring 'Health, Sanitation & Social Safety net for all' along with the implementation of MDG-2015.
But the shocking findings released by the SPI report on Bangladesh concerning failure to ensure religious tolerance, freedom of press and minority protection make us brood over failure of political commitment to uphold the constitution of Bangladesh.
This failure, on the part of Bangladesh, is the utter liability of the nasty politics and the crooked politicians of Bangladesh who have been playing hide and seek in our political arena even after the liberation of Bangladesh. Their dirty game has branded Bangladesh a communal country where politicians take advantage of the soft-heartedness of our countrymen. Bangladesh would have done better if the political stalwarts had not raised artificial religious crisis to destabilise the prevailing harmony.
Finally, the political stalwarts must pay for it. Let them be ashamed of rewriting national history of a specific religious prominence in Bangladesh fabricating the conscience of the Liberation War.
