KHULNA, Nov 11: The prices of all kinds of spices have shot up sharply before the Eid-ul Azha, the second biggest religious festival for the Muslims in southwestern districts. Retail sellers said the price of spices has increased higher than the previous years. The price of onion, cardamom and cumin has risen up abnormally. The businessmen anticipate that there is no possibility of the prices of spices going down rather it may rise higher before Eid-ul-Azha.
The recent sharp rise in prices of spices has made living tough for the commoners, especially the low-income group, in this region ahead of Eid. Dearth of supply is the main reason behind the price hike of different kinds of spices, sources said.
This correspondent visited a number of city kitchen markets on Thursday and found that prices of spices ginger, garlic, chili, turmeric, dry chili, cumin, and clove also rose substantially.
Onion only a week back was selling at Tk. 30-32 per kg. Now it is selling at Tk. 40-42 per kg while Indian onion is selling at Tk.35 per kg. Garlic is being sold at Tk. 190-200 while imported garlic is being sold Tk. 150-160 per kg. Ginger at Tk. 90 -100 per kg. Dry chili at Tk. 130-140 per kg. Turmeric powder at Tk. 350-400 per kg. Cardamom at Tk. 2800 per kg. Cumin at Tk.320-350 per kg is being sold in the local markets.
There is a wide gap between the wholesale price and retail market price, but the consumers have to pay high prices as usual.
