Spices pungent, rice prices steady in city markets

Prices of spices and edible oil were up while that of sugar and rice remained steady in the city's kitchen market, traders said Friday.
Prices of some spice items such as cardamom, cinnamon and cumin seeds witnessed an upward trend last week, they added.
At the retail level, cardamom was selling at Tk 2800-Tk 3000 per kg up from Tk 2500- Tk 2800 per kg, cinnamon at Tk 300 against Tk 250 per kg, cumin seeds at Tk 400 per kg up from Tk 320- Tk 360 per kg.
Traders said, prices of imported ginger also witnessed an upward trend and it was selling at Tk 112 per kg, up from Tk 110 per kg in the previous week.
Local garlic was selling at Tk 110 per kg while the imported variety was ranged between Tk 125 and Tk 130 per kg.
Sugar was selling between Tk 44 and Tk 54 per kg last week.
Local lentil was selling at Tk 106-Tk 108 per kg and the imported variety ranged between Tk 90 and Tk 100 per kg.
Local onion was selling at Tk 22 per kg while the imported variety was steady at Tk 18- Tk 20 per kg up by Tk 2 per kg.
The prices of brand edible oil in five-litre containers remained the previous week's rate. Rupchanda was selling at Tk 434, Teer at Tk 424, ACI and Fresh at Tk 420 last week.
The prices of non-brand edible oil such as palm oil, super palm oil and soybean oil increased by Tk 2- Tk 3 and ranged between Tk 82 and Tk 95 per litre.
Rice traders claimed that high prices of paddy were responsible for the recent hike of rice price in the last four weeks. They blamed millers' competition for buying paddy, which raised the prices of rice.
Minicate was selling at Tk 40- Tk 42 per kg and Nazirshail at Tk 42-Tk 46 per kg at the retail level.
Coarse varieties also maintained the earlier high price. IRRI was selling at Tk 30- Tk 32 per kg, Pari at Tk 34 per kg and BR-28 at Tk 35 per kg at the retail level last week.
Prices of fish except hilsa remained steady in the city's kitchen markets, market sources said.
A pair of small-size hilsa was selling at Tk 1050 which was almost the same a week ago.
'Ruhi' was selling at Tk 180- Tk 200 per kg, 'katla' at Tk 200 per kg, 'Pangas' at Tk 100 per kg, 'Silver Carp' at Tk 200 per kg and 'Mrigel' at Tk 170 per kg in the city's kitchen markets.
Small fish 'telapia' was priced at Tk 130-Tk 150, 'puti' at Tk 200-Tk 300 and 'Tengra' at Tk 300-Tk 330 a kg on an average.
On the other hand, some vegetables like tomato were selling at previous high prices mainly due to off-season supply shortage and was selling at Tk.40 per kg, traders said.
However, potato remained steady and was selling at Tk 12 per kg.
Prices of other vegetables remained more or less steady last week. Long bean (borboty) was selling at Tk 18-20 per kg, brinjal at Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg, okra at Tk 20 per kg, potal at Tk 16-Tk 18 per kg, papaya at Tk 16 per kg and a medium size gourd at Tk 20-25 last week.
Green chili was selling at Tk 40 per kg, market sources said.
The price of a dozen red farm eggs was selling at Tk 69, white eggs at Tk 69 and local eggs at Tk 90.
Prices of poultry bird declined by Tk 5 and was selling at Tk 145per kg while that of beef and mutton ranged between Tk 250-Tk 260 per kg and Tk 350-Tk 360 per kg respectively.
