FE Report
The government is contemplating providing special assistance to the farmers of cyclone-hit districts to facilitate re-plantation of crops and resumption of economic activities.
"We are discussing about providing such assistance and reviewing the situation," Bangladesh Bank governor Salehuddin Ahmed said referring to his meeting with the finance adviser Monday.
The BB governor said: "We have asked the NCBs, Krishi Bank and Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank to start loan disbursement to help cultivation of crops and production of some specific goods."
Talking to a group of journalists after the inaugural ceremony of the Ahsania-Malaysia Hajj Investment and Finance Company Ltd (AM-HIFC), he also said that the rate of interest on bank loan might remain unchanged and added, "Let us see."
Replying to a question on food stock, the BB governor said imports have been encouraged.
He, however, stressed the need for enhancing domestic production.
Asked whether the inflation rate will go up, the BB governor said: "I can't predict it now."
Asked about performance of the NCBs after the devastating flood, he said performance is satisfactory and it is better in this quarter (October-December) compared with that of the previous quarter.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of AM-HIFC, he said this is the last non-banking financial institution (NBFI) to which the BB has issued licence and expressed the hope that it would provide better services to the pilgrims.
He suggested the authorities concerned of the AM-HIFC to sponsor hajj pilgrimage for the country's Islamic scholars.
