S'pore's half-year inflation up 7.1pc

Tuesday, 26 August 2008

SINGAPORE, Aug 25 (Xinhua): Singapore's inflation rate in the first half of 2008 increased 7.1 per cent compared with the same period a year ago, the government figures showed today.

The consumer price index (CPI) for households in the lowest 20 per cent income group surged 7.4 per cent, while the increase was slightly lower for both the middle 60 per cent and highest 20 per cent income groups at 6.9 per cent, said a statement by Singapore's department of statistics.

"The higher inflation rate experienced by the lowest 20 per cent income group was due primarily to dearer food as well as higher accommodation costs and electricity tariffs," said the department.

Food, housing and transport and communications were the three main groups contributing to the surge in inflation for income groups across the board, it added.
