KHULNA, Dec 6: Adulterated poultry feed has flooded the markets of the south-western region of the country causing grave concern among the owners of the poultry farms of the region.
There are at least 5000 poultry firms in the region and there are over 1.2 million poultry birds there. Besides, hundreds of rural people keep a number of poultry birds or ducks in their houses for eggs. The number of these poultry and ducks will be about 50 lac.
It is learnt that a section of dishonest businessmen are mixing adulterated and sub-standard stuff with the husks of rice, oil cake, cockle dust and other poultry feed and selling those in the open markets to earn windfall profits. Intake of such foods has caused various diseases including diarrhoea, resulting in the death of a large number of poultry birds, sources added.
Huge number of poultry birds in farms fully depend on ready made feed sold at the poultry feed selling shops in the city, towns and big markets in the village area. At present in every farm many poultry birds have been suffering from various diseases. Prices of some poultry feed have registered a sharp rise in the markets affecting all the districts of the region.
Meanwhile, adulterated poultry feed and sharp rise in the prices of preventive medicines have affected hundreds of poultry farms.
According to a market survey, prices of poultry medicine, like CSBS, Proclivity and other medicines are selling at exorbitant prices. On the other hand, one kg of maize and wheat dust is being sold at Tk 20 as against Tk 16, rice polish is being sold at Tk 14 as against Tk 10, cockle dust is being sold at Tk 36 to Tk 38 as against Tk 28 to 30 and dry fish dust is being sold at Tk 48 as against Tk 35 in the local markets. The prices of other poultry feed such as oil cakes have also shot up abnormally.
