Thursday, 30 October 2014

A Dhaka court on Thursday granted bail to the wife and son of condemned war crimes convict Salauddin Quader Chowdhury in a case filed over leaking the draft of verdict on the war crimes case against the BNP leader. Cyber Tribunal (Bangladesh) Judge KM Shamsul Alam passed the order when SQ Chowdhury's wife Farhat Quader Chowdhury and son Hummam Quader Chowdhury surrendered before his court seeking bail. Special Public Prosecutor of the tribunal Md Nazrul Islam Shamim opposed the bail. The court also rejected bail prayer of another accused in the case Faruque Hossain, now behind the bars. October 14, the same court issued a warrant for arresting three people, including the wife and son of SQ Chowdhury, in the case. International Crimes Tribunal-1 on October 1, 2013, sentenced BNP standing committee member SQ Chowdhury to death for his crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh's imdependence struggles in 1971. But, the verdict without containing the court observation and judgment got posted on different websites much ahead of its pronouncement. Showing the copies of the verdict collected from the websites, Salauddin's wife claimed that the judgment against her husband was dictated and he was denied justice. She also said the verdict circulated on the websites was originated from the Law Ministry. Later, the tribunal admitted that the draft of the verdict had been leaked and a case was filed under the Information and Communication Technology Act. Police arrested the accused ICT employees on Oct 5. Chowdhury’s lawyer was arrested from his Segunbagicha residence on Nov 20. Following a case, detectives on Aug 28 pressed charges against 7 persons, including Farhat Quader Chowdhury and Humam Quader Chowdhury for allegedly leaking the verdict, according to bdnews24.com.
