Sreepur AL candidate changed
Tuesday, 11 March 2014
The Awami League (AL) has changed the candidate whom it had earlier backed for the chairman post in Sreepur Upazila election in Gazipur. The decision has been taken following a clash between supporters of the renegade AL candidate Abdul Jalil and official candidate Iqbal Hassan Sabuj and the death of an AL activist in the fierce clash. The rebel candidate has now become the official chairman candidate for Sreepur Upazila poll. Sabuj, known to be loyal to Gazipur district unit AL President and Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq, had already begun campaigning for the Mar 15 election. But Jalil, AL member of Upazila unit, began a parallel campaign, defying the party decision. Jalil is a supporter of local MP Md Rahmat Ali. Jalil said the minister and AL Gazipur district unit’s General Secretary Ajmat Ullah Khan had called him on Monday night, telling him that he had got the party high command’s endorsement. “The party’s high command has changed its decision in the greater interest; I have been informed of the matter on Monday evening,” Ajmat Ullah said. Sabuj was contacted over phone but did not take the call, according to bdnews24.com.
