SSKOP asks Janakantha to meet demands by Apr 30

Wednesday, 22 April 2009

Sangbadik Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad (SSKOP) Tuesday asked the Dainik Janakantha owner to pay salaries and benefits of the terminated journalists, workers and employees by April 30 or face tough action programmes, reports BSS.
The SSKOP leaders condemned the owner of the newspaper, who himself came down to the street with a stick and threatened the demonstrators. Police also tried to foil the meeting of the journalists, workers and employees.
However, the SSKOP leaders held the meeting defying the police obstruction, and demanded immediate implementation of the seventh Wage Board in all newspapers and news agencies in the country.
They voiced their demands at the sit-in demonstration in front of the Dainik Janakantha Bhaban to solve the prevailing problems of the Daily Ittefaq, Observer, Janakantha and Dinkal.
SSKOP co-convenors Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury and Fazle Imam, joint member secretary MA Aziz, and members Baker Hossain and Abul Hasem addressed the rally. Other leaders Shilabrato Barua, Abid Hasan, SMG Kibria and Santa Maria also spoke. SSKOP co-convenor Ruhul Amin Gazi presided over the meeting.
They also sought legal actions against those newspaper and news agency owners, who have not yet implemented the seventh Wage Board despite legal obligations.
The meeting demanded restoration of the Newspaper Employees Services Conditions Act-1974, and formulation of a 'national newspapers industry policy.'
The SSKOP leaders wanted the government's intervention in resolving the problems of the newspapers. Otherwise, they said, SSKOP will be compelled to go for an all-out movement to realise their demands.
