Stage set to restore Baksal rule: BNP

Monday, 22 September 2014

BNP Monday alleged that the government is all set to re-establish one-party Baksal rule by annihilating democracy with the 16th amendment to the constitution.
“The judiciary has totally gone under Awami League’s control with the 16th amendment. The party has completed its all preparations to re-establish one-party autocratic rule by obliterating democracy with the passage of the bill,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, according to a news agency.
Hours after President Abdul Hamid assented to the much-talked-about ‘Constitution (16th Amendment) Bill, 2014 empowering parliament to remove judges, the BNP leader came up with the remarks at a press briefing on 20-party’s daylong hartal at BNP’s central office.
Earlier in the day, addressing a press briefing BNP joint secretary general M Shajahan had urged President Abdul Hamid to refrain from assenting to the 16th Amendment Bill and send it back to parliament for its reconsideration, but the President did not pay heed to it.
