Standard Chartered provides \\\'governor scholarship\\\' to DU students

Standard Chartered Bank, Bangladesh recently provided scholarships to top students of Dhaka University Department of Development Studies and Department of Economics, said a press release.
Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank Shitangshu Kumar Sur Chowdhury, Chairman of Department of Development Studies, University of Dhaka Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, Chairman of Department of Economics Professor Mohammad Ali Taslim, Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed and Head of Legal & Compliance, Standard Chartered Bank Chowdhury MAQ Sarwar were present at the ceremony held at Professor Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium, Social Sciences Faculty Bhaban of Dhaka University.
A total of 50 students from Department of Development Studies and 10 Students from Department of Economics were awarded the "Governor Scholarship".
Standard Chartered Bank signed agreements with Dhaka University Department of Development Studies (DDS) and Dhaka University Economics Department Alumni Association (DUEDAA) in 2009 to provide financial assistance to meritorious students.
This scholarship was named 'Governor Scholarship' to recognize the contribution of the Central Bank Governor in economic development of the country.
In his speech as the chief guest, Shitangshu Kumar Sur Chowdhury said Education is recognized as one of the main themes of action for strengthening democratic institutions, the development of human potential, equality and comprehension between communities. For several years, Bangladesh Banking Industry has contributed significantly towards this cause through CSR initiatives as per guidance from the Central Bank. We believe that increased educational capacity will positively influence economic growth and the eradication of poverty.
Chowdhury MAQ Sarwar said Standard Chartered Bank has always been here to support the pursuance of excellence - be that in business or in education - as long as it results in making our community better. This opportunity to facilitate better access to formal education through the Governor Scholarship is another proof of our commitment. We believe that contributing in skill development; specially education will help economic growth and alleviate poverty for Bangladesh.
