Stark realities in education sector

Md. Tofazzel Hossain | Wednesday, 20 November 2013

More than 3,000 teaching positions are lying vacant in 292 government colleges for a long time. On an average, more than five teaching positions in subjects like Maths and English are also lying vacant in each of the 317 government secondary schools. Moreover, more than 200 secondary schools have no head teachers for a long time.
On the other hand, we have enough qualified people searching for jobs. But they are frustrated for not getting it. This writer knows a person who got the 1st place in the Honours and as well as in the Master's degree but is still not getting a job for more than a year. He faced more than 50 job interviews.
The young generation expected a lot to get jobs during the tenure of the Awami League government but it was not to be.
During the tenure of the AL government, educational cost increased significantly. Students lose their valuable time as they have to attend coaching classes.
When the world today is considering to scrap examinations at the school level to relieve students of their mental pressure, we are introducing new exams like PSC and JSC. Most of the developed countries have no public examinations in the school system.
We see many engineers, doctors and agriculturists working in the banking sector. Do we need for their specialised skills in banking? And we call for Master's degree for most of the jobs. These are not only in banking but also in other sectors also. Actually, it is a huge loss of public money.
This scribe talked to a person who said a large number of students did not do well in the test examinations. But they can do well in the final PSC Math exam. He said students today see others' answer scripts and share in the examination halls and teachers help them. At the very beginning of their students' life, are they not learning cheating?
We should organise a yearly conference on development of education sector. Further steps may be considered there for its progress in future.
