State-owned sugar mills to surpass output target

Monday, 31 December 2007

The state-owned sugar mills are likely to surpass the target of sugar production during the current sugarcane-crushing season (2007-08), reports UNB.
The mills under Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) produced 49,231 tonnes of sugar till December 29, 2007 against the target of 174,021 tonnes in the current crushing season.
This was disclosed at a meeting of the senior officials of different corporations and organisations under the Industries Ministry held Sunday with Industries Adviser Geeteara Safiya Chowdhury in the chair.
The meeting was informed that in the 2006-07 sugarcane-crushing season, the state-owned sugar mills produced 14,462 tonnes more sugar than the target.
Addressing the meeting, the Adviser stressed the need for setting up labour intensive small and medium industries for alleviating poverty in the densely populated Bangladesh.
"In the present context, the desired socioeconomic development will never be possible without strengthening the industrial programme," she said.
The Industries Adviser also advised the officials to discharge their official duties as their own with a positive attitude.
It was also informed at the meeting that the Industries Ministry would soon take up a project for the feasibility study in the coastal areas to increase production of salt in the country.
The ministry has also decided to monitor if iodine is being mixed properly with salt to mitigate the iodine deficiency among the people.
The meeting formed a committee with the officials concerned of Bangladesh Industrial Technical Assistance Centre (BITAC) and Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) to examine the effectiveness of BITAC-made SIP machine used in determining the iodine content in salt.
The committee has been asked to submit its report within a week after field inspection of the SIP machines.
Industries Secretary M Nurul Amin, senior officials of the Ministry, and heads of different corporations and concerned project directors were present.
