State-run jute mills make remarkable progress

The state-run jute mills have made tremendous progress in recent years in respect of production, export and earning thanks to reopening of some closed jute mills and rising demand of the 'golden fibre' in both domestic and international markets, official sources said.
Besides, because of public awareness about keeping the environment pollution-free, the use of jute products has recently increased in the local market.
Total earning in FY 2008-2009 was Tk 4.31 billion by exporting 89,042 tonnes of jute products and in FY 2009-2010 total earning was Tk 6.52 billion by exporting 105,798 tonnes of jute items.
There was an 18.82 per cent increase in the quantity of export while the export earning increased by 51.36 per cent compared to previous fiscal year.
In fiscal year 2008-2009, the state-run mills sold 19,138 tonnes of jute products in the local market and earned Tk 991.60 million.
Tk 2.74 billion was earned in FY 2009-2010 by selling 33,992 tonnes of jute items in the local market.
The total earning increased by 176.32 per cent against previous fiscal year by selling 77.62 per cent more jute products.
In FY 2009-2010, the total production of jute products under 16 state-run jute mills was 145,920 tonnes and it increased by 32.60 per cent compared to previous fiscal year.
There was also a 20.92 per cent increase of manpower in FY 2009-2010 against fiscal year 2008-2009.
A high official of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) told the FE that the demand of jute products has recently increased in the country and so all necessary steps to reopen the closed jute mills have been taken.
"The present government from the beginning of coming to power has been trying its best to reopen the closed mills and the reopening of Adamjee Jute Mills is under consideration," the official said.
