Steps taken to check spread of malaria in 13 districts

RANGAMATI, Jan 1 (UNB): Health Department has taken up a special programme to check spread of malaria in 13 malaria-prone districts of the country including Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban.
Health Department with the help of BRAC will implement the programme. According to a Health Department report, 95 per cent of the malaria-related deaths had been recorded in the three hill districts.
District Civil Surgeon Dr M Abdullah said this special programme would be conducted along with the ongoing programmes.
Under the programme, BRAC will establish health centres and labs to provide treatment to the malaria patients free of cost. In the first phase, mosquito nets impregnated with insecticides will be distributed among 17 lakh poor people of the area.
According to Health Department, 14,583 malaria patients were identified after examining 48,352 patients in the three hill districts. Besides, 55 people died of the disease.
The sources said some 75 people died of malaria in 2006, 96 in 2005 and 104 in 2004 in Rangamati district, 81 people in 2004 and 88 in 2005 in Bandarban. Besides, 102 people died in 2004 and 71 in 2005 in Khagrachhari.
