Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina Wednesday told the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) that her government has taken special programmes for overall development of the country's all seaports including setting up deep seaport to fulfil its election pledges, reports BSS.
"The present government has taken the initiatives for further expediting the country's economic activities and fulfilling its pledges," she said replying to a question from Jatiya Party (JP) lawmaker Mahjabin Morshed during the PM's Question-Answer session in the house.
The Prime Minister said the Chittagong Port Authority has been implementing various development projects for improving its services as well as cargo handling in the port.
The programmes were introduction of computerised container terminal management system (CTMS), construction of backward linkage facilities behind no-4 and 5 berth of the Newmooring Container Terminal, setting up Radiation Detection Equipment, construction of 1000-bed multi special city hospital, setting up vessel traffic surveillance (VTSS), construction of a multi-storied car parking shed in Chittagong Port and conducting capital dredging in the river Karnaphuli.
Besides, the PM said her government has undertaken seven projects with an estimated cost of over Tk 4.67 billion (467.45 crore) and three development
programmes of Tk 297.5 million for development and modernisation of Mongla Sea Port.
Tk 590 million has already been allocated in the fiscal 2010-11 in the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for the projects, she said.
The government has a plan to implement five more projects with an estimated cost of Tk 18.028 billion in the sixth five-year plan, she added.
The projects, which are being implemented for development of Mongla Sea Port, were procurement of cargo handling equipment, conducting capital dredging in the outer bar and harbour channel in the Pashur river, procuring cutter suction dredger, pilot and ditchpatch boat, and port and logistics efficiency improvement (feasibility study project).
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister Wednesday said stern action would be taken for the sake of national interest against the TV channels if found involved in encouraging militancy.
