Steps taken to free Bangladeshi prisoners from foreign jails

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday informed the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) that Bangladesh missions abroad had taken various measurers to free the Bangladeshi prisoners languishing in foreign jails and send them back to the country, reports BSS.

In a written reply to a question by Jatiya Party lawmaker HM Golam Reza, she said many Bangladeshi workers being cheated by some travel and recruiting agencies had been languishing in jails abroad.

"All prisoners are given legal assistance through the Bangladesh missions concerned and they are provided travel permit to return to the country," she said.

Giving details, the Prime Minister said persons being cheated by recruiting and travel agencies made allegations to the ministry concerned, manpower, employment and training bureau against the agencies, legal actions were being taken following proper investigation.

Hasina said Tk 9,40,56,000 had been distributed among the affected people by realising the money from the concerned recruiting agencies following their allegations last year.

Apart from these, she said licences of 25 recruiting agencies were cancelled while activities of 13 recruiting agencies were suspended last year following allegations.

The Prime Minister said registration of nine recruiting agencies was also cancelled recently following allegations of the victims. Besides, 1,136 cases have been filed against 1,191 brokers and 33 travel/recruiting agencies under the existing law in 2008.

Another report adds: the Prime Minister informed the House Wednesday that the present government had taken up steps to prepare a master plan for the development of 'haor' region having 15 million population.

In a written reply to a question from Jatiya Party lawmaker Nawab Ali Abbas Khan (Moulvibazar-2), she said the past Awami League government in 1996-2001 had constituted a board for the development of 'haor' and water bodies.

The government had already implemented a number of projects for the development of 'haor' region, the Prime Minister said adding that the water resources ministry was executing a project at a cost of Tk 7,37,43,000.

Hasina said two projects -- Tanguar Haor Sustainable Management and Coastal and Wetland Biodiversity Management at Cox's Bazar and Hakaluki Haor -- were being implemented by the environment and forests ministry.

DPP of the Haor Rehabilitation Project had been formulated, she said adding the government would give priority to the development of 'haor' region.
