Steps taken to modernise Naval forces: Navy chief

CHITTAGONG, June 30: Two castle class OPD and a survey ship from the UK will be added to the country's naval fleet shortly that will give a boost to the existing capacity of the Bangladesh Navy in a great way.
Besides, steps have been taken to strengthen and modernise the naval forces with the joining of a maritime helicopter and a patrol aircraft within the year 2011.
Chief of Bangladesh Navy Vice Admiral Zahir Uddin Ahmed said this while inspecting the President's parade and receiving salute of the newly commissioned midshipmen of the 2008-B Batch of the naval forces at the Bangladesh Naval Academy at Patenga in Chittagong this morning.
23 midshipmen were awarded commission in the Bangladesh Navy this time.
Stating that this government is sincerely trying to modernize the naval forces the naval chief said the Bangladesh Navy will turn into a modern force to guard against the sovereignty of the country.
He directed the newly commissioned officers of the Navy to dedicate themselves to the service of the nation.
Local MPs, high ranking civil and military officers, diplomats from home and abroad and guardians of the midshipmen cadets were present on the occasion.
