'Nirapod Sharak Chai,' an NGO, and National Trading Company (NTC), a local company, will jointly set up a driving and mechanical training institute in every district town by next seven years to train drivers free of cost.
Iliyas Kanchan, an actor and chairman of Nirapod Sharak Chai, a movement that has been campaigning for safe roads, said "Driving and mechanical training institutes will be set up in five divisional cities within this year."
"Around 70 per cent students pass SSC every year and at least 25-30 per cent of them fail to get admission in colleges and gets frustrated.
"We will provide training to those students on driving and mechanical skill development which will develop the standard of drivers in the country," he said while announcing the launch of the driving and mechanical training institute in Dhaka Saturday at National Press Club.
He said the recent rate of road accidents is around 47 per cent which can be reduced with educated drivers.
The road accident rate of London is 3-4 per cent, in India the rate is 9-10 per cent while the rate is 12-13 per cent in Pakistan, he quoted.
He also quoted from the news of Prothom Alo on December 27 that Bangladesh has 1.25 million registered vehicles while legal drivers are 0.8 million which means mentionable numbers are illegal.
"To introduce a developed, civilised and enlightened transport system, drivers should at least process an SS certificate," said Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed, founder of the Bishwo Shahitto Kendro and TIB chairman as chief guest.
He urged the government to enact a law that drivers of buses and trucks should be at least Secondary School Certificate holders and only education can change the attitude of drivers and reduce the severe road accidents.
