Wednesday, 9 January 2008

FE Report
Stock prices on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) Tuesday ended broadly higher led by banks, energy and power, pharmaceuticals and insurance issues, clawing back losses after two consecutive days' of fall.
The turnover on the prime bourse slightly climbed but it still remained below Tk1.00 billion-mark. The day's turnover rose to Tk 815.47 million from previous day's Tk 743.96 million, an eight-month low since May 10 last year.
The share prices rallied on the day as rumour spread on the market during trading hours that the capital market regulatory body is going to lift the ban imposed on the merchant banks' loan disbursement facilities for its clients, according to the market operators.
In a bid to cool down the overheated market, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) restricted the loan disbursement facilities for the merchant banks to 1: 0.5 from 1:1.
All the market barometers-DSE General Index (DGEN), All Share Price Index and DSE-20 Index (DS20)-rose 24.16 points, 19.38 points and 15.65 points to close at 2947.03, 2482.43 and 2415.15 respectively.
Out of 220 traded issues, prices of 161 advanced, 45 declined and 14 remained unchanged.
But the market capitalisation also rose to Tk 755.35 billion from Tk 750.56 billion.
Trading, however, began with a negative note as the key index fell over five points in the first ten minutes of trading session but started to rise towards the end of trading due mainly to purchasing stocks from the retail investors.
The A-category IFIC bank continued to top the turnover list for the third consecutive day with shares worth Tk 77.12 million changing hands. Stocks of the bank registered a 0.54 per cent rise to close at Tk 2642.75 per share.
AB Bank was the second turnover leader with shares worth Tk 56.32 million followed by Grameen One with Tk 52.95 million, Summit Power with 36.98 million, Square Pharmaceuticals with Tk 34.46 million, Keya Cosmetic with Tk 33.52 million, United Commercial Bank(UCB) with Tk 29.22 million, Fareast Islami Life Insurance Company with Tk 24.96 million, BRAC Bank with Tk 23.62 million and National Tube with 20.56 million traded.
