Stocks keep gaining

Stocks extended their gaining spell for the 3rd running session on Monday as investors showed buying interest on large-cap stocks. The prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange – DSEX – went up by 17.89 points or 0.37 per cent to finish at 4,786.19. In the last three sessions, DSEX added around 28 points. The two other indices also ended higher. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, gained 6.32 points or 0.34 per cent to settle at 1,824.92. The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) rose 6.30 points or 0.53 per cent to reach 1,175.46 points. However, turnover dropped to Tk4.37 billion, which was 4.38 per cent lower than the previous session’s Tk 4.57 billion as a section of investors followed meticulous strategy ahead of Eid festival. Only six trading sessions are left ahead of Eid vacation as the bourses will remain closed for five days – September 23 to September 27 – on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
The gainers took a marginal lead over the losers as out of 322 issues traded, 145 closed higher, 138 lower and 39 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor. The market capitalisation of the DSE stood at Tk3,348.73 billion against Tk3,337.32 billion in the previous session. Beximco Pharma dominated the day’s turnover chart with shares of Tk 205 million changing hands followed by Lafarge Surma Cement, Aman Feed, Square Pharma and United Airways. Power Grid Companay was the day’s best performer, posting a rise of 9.76 per cent following the news that Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission has enhanced electricity transmission tariff (wheeling charge) of the Company with effect from September 1, 2015, while Imam Button was the day’s worst loser, plunging by 8.84 per cent. The port city bourse – Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) – closed marginally higher with its Selective Categories Index – CSCX – gaining 38.86 points to end at 8,909. Losers beat gainers 114 to 101, with 36 issues remaining unchanged on the port city bourse that traded 9.47 million shares and mutual fund units with a value of Tk278.48 million.
