Stolen DMCH baby recovered in Gazipur

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a drive recovered the baby, stolen from Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Infant Ward on August 21, and arrested two women from Kalameshwar area of Board Bazar in Gazipur early on Thursday, report agencies.
The arrestees were identified as Rasheda Akhtar alias Parvin (48) and Bely Akhtar alias Rahima (45).
The baby has been taken to Rab headquarters at Uttara in the city.
The cheerful father, Kawser Hossain, heaped credit on the media.
"If the media had not reported it, my child would not have been rescued. I thank the government and the administration. They managed to rescue my son as the incident was reported in the media.
"So, I will raise my two sons in a way they can become journalists," said Hossain, drawing applause from RAB personnel and journalists.
After someone mentioned that it was the RAB who rescued the baby, the father said: "I have thought raising both of the sons to be journalists. But if you insist then one will be a RAB member when he grows up and the other a journalist."
Commander Mukti Mahmud Khan, director of the Legal and Media Wing of Rab Headquarters, at a press briefing said on a tip-off, a team of Rab conducted a drive in the area around 3:00am and arrested Rasheda Khanam. Based on information gleaned from her, Rab later conducted a raid at the house of Sona Mia in the same area and arrested Bely Akhtar along with the newborn.
Bely Akhtar was childless and Rasheda sold the newborn to her for Tk 40,000 after stealing it from the DMCH.
A woman, Ruma Akhter, gave birth to twins at the DMCH neonatal ward on August 20.
However, one of her babies was stolen on the morning of August 21.
None of the 53 CCTV cameras at the country's premier government hospital had been in use when the baby was stolen.
On August 27, the High Court ordered judicial investigation into the baby theft.
