Stolen newborn rescued, five held in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, Aug 30: Police in a drive rescued a newborn baby stolen by a woman impersonating a nurse from a clinic in the EPZ area of Cittagong.
The law enforcers arrested five people including a couple in connection with the incident.
The arrestees are supervisor of Mamata Maternity Clinic-2 Mohammad Morshed Alam (42), security guards Mohammad Selim (39), and Mohammad Abul Kashem (30), Shimu Das (20) who stole the baby and her husband Ripon Mollik (26).
Acting on information, police conducted the drive in the East Barkhain area of Anwara upzila in Chattogram and rescued the newborn baby in the early hours on Tuesday, said Abdul Karim, officer-in-charge (OC) of CEPZ thana.
He said, "The one-day-old was stolen from Mamata Maternity Clinic in the EPZ area on August 28. Upon receiving a complaint, police detained three employees of the clinic on suspicion."
"During interrogation, they confessed to their involvement in the incident and told police about the baby's whereabouts," he added.
Police rescued the baby and arrested Shimu Das and her husband Ripon Mollik. Later, the baby was handed over to the parents, the OC said.
He also said Shimu Das confessed that she had stolen the baby with the help of clinic staffers.
