Stop move to shift \\\'Cha Sangsad\\\' Secretariat : CCCI
FE Report | Monday, 16 February 2015
Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) Sunday sought intervention of the commerce minister to stop a recent move to shift the 'Cha Sangsad' Secretariat from Chittagong to Dhaka.
Expressing utter surprise over such a decision, CCCI President Mahbubul Alam in a statement said the secretariat was established in 1949 after taking into account the auction house, pertinent offices and infrastructural facilities.
"The process of shifting the 65-year-old organisation to Dhaka has been almost finalised. Such a decision was also taken in 1978, but it was ultimately cancelled following an order issued by the then commerce ministry," said Mr. Alam.
At present, there are 13 warehouses, six brokerage houses, transport business, distribution office and other infrastructural facilities for marketing and distribution of tea imported and produced in the country.
Mr. Alam also mentioned in the statement that the process of shifting Tea Board from Chittagong was withheld earlier in the face of protests by the businesses and tea garden owners. "But efforts to shift Tea Auction Centre have been continuing for a last couple of years."
"The business community of Chittagong terms this kind of act an ill effort to demean the glorious tradition of this area," said the statement.
