Stop poaching of guest birds

Sunday, 21 December 2025

In winter, the canals, haors and water bodies of our country beccome alive with the chirping of thousands of migratory birds. In the face of harsh winter and scarcity of food, these guest birds travel from Siberia, the Himalayas, and North Asia, and seek refuge in Bangladesh's warmer climate where food is abundant. They not only enhance our natural beauty but also maintain ecological balance by controlling harmful insects and protecting agriculture and fisheries.
Unfortunately, unscrupulous hunters are brutally killing hundreds of these birds daily using bait, nets and electric traps. Many migratory species are now on the verge of extinction due to such greed. Despite the Wildlife (Preservation and Security) Act prohibiting hunting and sale of these birds, poaching continues unchecked.
This destruction is a serious threat to our environment. If it continues, our ecology will face irreparable damage and future generations will inherit an impoverished natural world.
It is our collective responsibility to act. Citizens must support authorities, report about poachers, and form local committees to protect water bodies.
