Stop the sale of piranha fish

Sunday, 14 December 2025

I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities to the alarming sale of banned piranha fish in various markets across Kushtia district. Despite clear legal restrictions, these invasive and dangerous fish are being sold openly, raising serious concerns for both environmental safety and public health.
Piranha fish are prohibited in Bangladesh under the Environment Conservation Act, 2012, due to their aggressive nature. They attack native fish and other aquatic species, rapidly disrupting the natural balance of rivers, ponds and wetlands. If this practice continues unchecked, local fish biodiversity will face severe and possibly irreversible damage.
Moreover, piranha fish contain high levels of protein and fat, which may pose health risks for consumers, including digestive complications, kidney-related problems and blood pressure issues. The illegal sale of such fish, driven by the greed of a section of unscrupulous traders, puts unsuspecting consumers at risk.
